Audrey might not have been family by blood, but to me she was my adopted grandma. She always loved us like we were her family and loved me and Steph like we were her grand children. Darcy always called her great grandma Audrey. She was my favourite family member because she's the only person who loved me for me exactly how I am, and never judged me or criticised. She never had a bad word to say.
She was truly a wonderful woman who had the biggest heart. She had time for everyone from all walks of life, she was so thoughtful and kind. She was absolutely hilarious, sentimental, smart and interesting. We always had something to talk about. I loved to listen to her stories, of which there was never an end. Every time we visited she would always sing us a song and recite a poem.
My favourite memories of Audrey: Every time we visited her she would tell me about the time when I was three years old and I sang all the verses to Away In A Manager and One Two Three Four Five Once I Caught A Fish Alive, and how she couldn't believe it. Every time we visited she would always tell Darcy about how she used to watch me at the Remembrance Parade every year and how she couldn't believe that I was looking for her and Harry and that i always spotted them and waved, and how happy that made her abd how proud of me she was. As a child I was always excited to spot Audrey and Harry when I was marching. She would tear up with pride and it was evident how much she loved me, and how special these memories were to her.
She would always write me and Darcy letters and I kept every letter she ever wrote to me. Similarly Audrey kept everything everyone gave to her. She was a big collector of napkins, carrier bags, card confetti, you name it she kept it. As a child, and an adult, I loved visiting Audrey and Harry as their home was always so interesting with years of fascinating objects, and each one told a wonderful tale. Audrey loved to knit and every Christmas I used to love to see her knitted Nativity scene. She collected many trinkets over the years and made lovely Christmas and Easter displays.
I remember the lemon tree she grew from a seed that lived in the front room at Cross Street that she was always so proud to show us.
The last letter I received from Audrey a few days before she passed away, she ended with: "Cheerio to you all, and God Bless you all, and I hope all that you undertake to do is a success". It was almost like she knew it would be her last letter. I will treasure it forever Audrey.
God bless, you're at peace now with your beloved Harry. We will always love you and hold you in our hearts. Thank you for loving us like we were your own. Love you night night x
